A painful English conclusion about Ten Hag's acquisition Amrabat

Antony and Sofyan Amrabat led the malaise of Manchester United on Wednesday evening. Erik ten Hag's team suffered a heavy defeat in the League Cup against Newcastle United, and the two former Eredivisie players didn't fare well in the player ratings.

Manchester Evening News gave both Antony and substitute Amrabat a rating of 3. "Another one-sided performance by Ten Hag's golden boy," they wrote about the Brazilian. The newspaper also drew a strong conclusion about Amrabat. "Yet another player brought in by the manager who should never have been signed."

Only Casemiro, who also got injured on Wednesday, and Anthony Martial received lower ratings (a 2). Additionally, Ten Hag received the same rating. "He rewarded failed performances by giving players a starting spot. He rotated too much and went for a mismatch in midfield between Casemiro and Mason Mount."

In the Daily Mail, Ten Hag received a rating of 4. "His attempt to give certain players a chance failed massively. He endured the jeers of his own supporters." Sky Sports gave a subpar rating to a whopping eleven out of the fifteen United players used. Amrabat and Antony received a rating of 4. Former Ajax goalkeeper André Onana had the highest rating with a 6.

Even the statistics agency Squawka, which bases its evaluations on player data, singled out Antony and Amrabat as two of the worst players. Antony received a rating of 3: "He had the chance to prove himself but simply messed it up." Amrabat had to settle for a 3.5: "He suffered crucial ball loss leading up to Newcastle's third goal." Only Hannibal Mejbri received a lower rating, a 2.5. The BBC also included Antony and Amrabat among the five worst players of the evening.
