Bayern Munich secures a coup with 'dream team' contract extension

Bayern Munich announced not one, but two contract extensions on Tuesday. Both Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich are set to continue for an additional year with Der Rekordmeister. The experienced goalkeepers are now contracted until mid-2025.

Ulreich is the regular backup for Neuer, who made his return last month after a lengthy absence due to a leg fracture sustained while skiing. Ulreich has been with Bayern since 2015, except for a stint at Hamburger SV in the 2020/21 season. So far, he has played 98 matches for Bayern.

Meanwhile, Neuer is approaching five hundred matches with Bayern. The 37-year-old goalkeeper transferred from Schalke 04 in 2011 and currently stands at 494 games for the German champions. Bayern refers to Neuer and Ulreich on the club website as 'the strong backbone of the club'.

'Manuel and Sven are simply a dream team,' says Chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen. 'It's a pleasure to watch how they go about their daily work. They support and motivate each other and are a role model for the club. Sven has more than adequately filled Manuel’s shoes during his injury. We know we can rely on him.'

Neuer has an important goal in mind for the next one and a half years. 'The 2025 Champions League final in Munich, that’s where I want to be.' Meanwhile, Ulreich does not really see a competition with Neuer. 'We share much more than just our passion for football. Over the years, we have become good friends.'
