After working for Liverpool for over ten years, the current sporting director, Ward, will bid farewell this summer. He joined The Reds' scouting team in 2012 and worked his way up to become the sporting director. As of June 1st, Schmadtke will take over his responsibilities, pending the timely completion of the German's work permit. Schmadtke has previously worked for 1. FC Köln, Hannover 96, and Alemannia Aachen as well.

President of Fenway Sports Group, the owner of Liverpool FC, Mike Gordon, is pleased with the appointment of Schmadtke. "I would like to welcome Jorg to Liverpool, knowing that he will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to a role where those qualities are crucial. He will work alongside our football operations department to continue providing support to Jürgen Klopp."

"At the same time, we bid farewell to Julian Ward, who has served us with all his diligence, determination, and energy in various roles. We wish Julian and his family all the best for the future and thank him for everything he has done for Liverpool in the past eleven years."
