Due to a red card, Van Dijk had to miss the matches against Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He returned to the team against West Ham under the management of Jürgen Klopp, who had Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch on the bench.

Liverpool took an early lead through a converted penalty by Mohamed Salah but conceded an equalizer by Jarrod Bowen just before half-time (1-1, watch the goals below).

Curtis Jones appeared to put Liverpool in the lead with a goal, but it was disallowed due to offside. Within the hour, Darwin Núñez still managed to score, making it 2-1. The Uruguayan received a precise assist from Alexis Mac Allister and finished with a volley. West Ham, with Edson Álvarez in the starting lineup and Mohammed Kudus as a substitute, couldn't respond.

Gakpo and Gravenberch came on as substitutes. Diogo Jota, who came on as a substitute along with Gakpo and Gravenberch, sealed the victory with an assist from Van Dijk 3-1. With this win, Liverpool stays in the hunt for Manchester City. The dominant league leader has a perfect record after six games, while The Reds have one draw and are trailing by two points. West Ham United remains in sixth place.
