Ten Hag supports beleaguered Onana: 'Second best keeper in the PL'

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has firmly backed his goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Cameroonian goalkeeper had a poor performance in the Champions League match against Galatasaray with two blunders, but according to Ten Hag, Onana is the second-best keeper in the Premier League.

The progress of the English record champions hangs by a thread after United, partly due to Onana's blunders, only managed a draw in Istanbul, but Ten Hag continues to support his goalkeeper.

"If you analyze it, you will see that he is the second-best in the competition in the Premier League, based on statistics. There is only one goalkeeper who prevents more expected goals than he does." The number one in that ranking is Thomas Kaminski, the goalkeeper of struggler Luton Town.

However, at the press conference the day before the tough away game at Newcastle, Ten Hag does not ignore reality. "He's doing well, but he also knows he made a few mistakes in the Champions League. But all in all, he's done very well in the first five months. You also see how he reacts to setbacks. After the match against Bayern Munich, he was great against Burnley. He has a strong character."

It therefore seems that Onana will be back in goal at St. James' Park, for the tough game against The Magpies, who last month won 0-3 at Old Trafford in the League Cup. Ten Hag: "I have great respect for them. They are a tough opponent, but it's a great challenge for us. We will have to be at our best."
