Ancelotti names favorite for CL victory: 'But there are always surprises'

Real Madrid has started the season excellently. After five matches in La Liga, the Royal team has not dropped a single point. In the Champions League, coach Carlo Ancelotti remains cautious. 'We never see ourselves as the favorite.'

With fourteen victories, Real Madrid remains the club that has won the European Cup I and later the Champions League the most times. Last season, La Liga's leading team's journey ended in the semi-finals. The eventual winner, Manchester City, was then (much) too strong for Real. Ancelotti sees The Citizens as the favorite for the current edition.

'They won last season and not much has changed there,' the Italian coach explained at the press conference leading up to the home match against Union Berlin. 'But in the Champions League, there are always surprises. I see Real Madrid as a team that will compete until the end. We never see ourselves as the favorite, but I think the same applies to City. You could say they are the favorite.'

Modric starts

Dani Carvajal will not be available on Wednesday at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. The right-back is injured. Ancelotti hinted that Luka Modric will definitely start. The veteran has only started once in La Liga this season. 'Our relationship is very good,' said Ancelotti. 'Sometimes he might play less than before. He will play tomorrow.'
