Full focus on Bayer: Kofane declines invitation for World Cup qualifier

Christian Kofane is the rising star at Bayer 04. That is why the Cameroonian Football Federation has called up the 19-year-old to the national team. But the striker wants to focus entirely on his role at the club.

At the start of pre-season, Christian Kofane’s role at Bayer Leverkusen seemed set in stone.

The teenager was registered as the third-choice center forward, behind established stars Patrik Schick and Victor Boniface. It was the logical order: Schick, a proven Bundesliga goalscorer and one of the team’s leaders, was expected to command the striker position without question, while Boniface, with his physical strength and international experience, was regarded as the natural deputy. For Kofane, freshly arrived from Spain’s second division, the scenario appeared to offer limited opportunities. Most assumed he would spend much of the season watching from the sidelines, developing quietly and waiting for scraps of playing time in cup matches.

But football has a habit of overturning expectations, and in Leverkusen’s case, the dynamics of the attack were reshaped far more quickly than anyone had anticipated. The first surprise came when the club decided to loan out Victor Boniface to Werder Bremen. Bayer’s management believed regular minutes in Bremen would accelerate his progress, while also simplifying the pecking order at home. That decision elevated Kofane into the role of Schick’s direct understudy, effectively doubling his importance in the squad overnight.

Then came the real turning point. On Matchday 5, in the hard-fought 2-1 win away at FC St. Pauli, Patrik Schick picked up a fascia injury in his thigh. The blow sidelined the Czech international for several weeks, suddenly leaving Leverkusen without their established goalscorer and leader in the final third. For most clubs, such a loss would be a major crisis. For Christian Kofane, however, it was the window of opportunity he had been waiting for.

Thrust into the starting eleven earlier than planned, the young Cameroonian rose to the challenge with remarkable maturity. Having already tasted action alongside Schick in the 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen on Matchday 2, he was no stranger to the Bundesliga pace. But now the responsibility was squarely on his shoulders. In back-to-back games, Kofane proved he was ready for the stage. He found the net in the Champions League 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven, a performance that underlined his potential to deliver in Europe, and followed it up with a confident display in the 2-0 league victory over Union Berlin. His goals, combined with his sharp movement and ability to link up play, made him an instant asset to Xabi Alonso’s tactical setup.

By mid-October, Kofane had played in all of Bayer’s competitive matches, recording three goals and two assists. Not bad for a player who, just a year earlier, had been turning out for AS Nylon in Cameroon’s domestic league. His rapid ascent   from his homeland to Albacete’s U19s in November 2024, then into their second-division squad by January 2025, and now starring in both Bundesliga and Champions League fixtures   reads like a fairytale of modern football scouting.

It is no wonder that the Cameroonian Football Federation took notice. Seeing a 19-year-old thriving at one of Europe’s top clubs, they issued a senior call-up for the World Cup qualifiers against Mauritius and Angola. For most players his age, the decision would have been automatic: accept the honor, represent the nation, and take a step into international football. Yet Kofane made headlines by turning the invitation down   and for the second time in just a few months.

His explanation was simple but significant. He wanted to devote himself fully to his club career, to maintain momentum and prove that he belonged in the Bundesliga. For Kofane, jumping between continents at this delicate stage of his development carried risks: fatigue, disruption, and the danger of losing his hard-earned place in Alonso’s starting eleven. His decision highlights not just ambition, but also a rare maturity for a teenager in his position.

The refusal was not unprecedented. In August, before he had even played his first competitive match for Bayer, Kofane had declined a similar invitation for September fixtures. Back then, the choice was framed as a strategic move to focus on adaptation and to increase his chances of breaking into Leverkusen’s rotation. That gamble has paid off perfectly. By staying with the team, training consistently, and capitalizing on opportunities, he has transformed from a fringe figure into one of the Bundesliga’s most surprising breakout talents of the season.

Now, attention turns to what comes next. Patrik Schick is nearing full fitness and could return after the international break, potentially in the game against Mainz. For Alonso, this presents both a dilemma and a luxury. Should he restore Schick immediately to the starting lineup, reestablishing the hierarchy as it was at the start of the season? Or should he manage Schick’s reintegration more carefully, mindful of the congested calendar and of the excellent form shown by Kofane? The Spaniard’s handling of the situation will be crucial, balancing the need to protect a proven striker with the recognition of a rising star who has earned his spot.

Beyond the club level, Kofane’s international story remains unresolved. While Cameroon will undoubtedly continue to monitor him closely, his focus on Leverkusen means the national team will have to wait. For the federation, his absence in key qualifiers may be a source of frustration, but in the long run, a more seasoned and confident Kofane could prove invaluable on the road to future tournaments.

For Bayer’s supporters, however, the message is clear: in Christian Kofane, they may have discovered not just a short-term solution during Schick’s injury, but a striker with the talent, drive, and mentality to become a fixture in the team for years to come. What began as an emergency adjustment has blossomed into one of the Bundesliga’s most compelling narratives of the season.
