Joan Laporta expects that Barcelona will soon reach an agreement on the extension of Raphinha's contract. Talks with Lamine Yamal are also progressing well. After that, the Catalans will enter the transfer market to strengthen certain positions.

On Monday, Joan Laporta gave a lengthy interview to TV3 in which he spoke candidly about several key issues concerning Barcelona’s present and future.
The club president addressed contract renewals, upcoming moves in the transfer market, and the team’s improved financial situation, which now allows for more freedom after years of strict limitations imposed by La Liga.
One of the most urgent matters raised by Laporta is the contract renewal of Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder remains a central figure in Barcelona’s midfield structure and, despite years of speculation linking him with Premier League sides such as Manchester United and Chelsea, the Catalan club still views him as a key piece of its long-term project. According to Laporta, no final agreement has been reached yet, but the club’s intentions are clear: they want to keep De Jong for the foreseeable future. “Frenkie is essential for us,” Laporta said. “Not only for what he brings right now, but also for what he represents in our future plans. His contract situation is a priority we want to resolve as soon as possible.”
While De Jong’s case is still under negotiation, Raphinha’s situation appears to be much closer to a positive outcome. The Brazilian winger, who joined from Leeds United, has shown flashes of brilliance at Camp Nou, although his performances have at times lacked consistency. Nonetheless, the club sees his potential and is eager to extend his stay. Laporta confirmed that discussions are well underway, led by sporting director Deco, and that both sides are aligned. “Deco is working on it. An agreement will come soon because we want him to stay, and he wants to stay,” he affirmed.
Another major issue on the club’s table involves teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. At just 17 years old, Yamal has taken Spanish football by storm with his electric pace, fearless approach, and maturity beyond his years. Despite his age, he has already become a vital part of Xavi’s plans and a fan favorite at Camp Nou. His current contract expires in 2025, but Laporta reassured supporters that the club has already reached a full agreement with the player and his camp. Due to legal restrictions, a long-term professional deal can only be signed once he turns 18, which will happen on July 13. “Everything is agreed, only the signature is missing,” Laporta said. “Lamine is exceptional, both on and off the pitch. He’s incredibly mature for his age, and his new salary will reflect the importance of his role in the team.”
In addition to Yamal, defender Iñigo Martínez is also in talks with the club regarding his future. Barcelona appears committed to blending experienced players with rising talents as they reshape the squad for the seasons ahead.
With these contract matters nearing resolution, Barcelona’s focus is beginning to shift toward the summer transfer market. For several seasons, the club operated under heavy financial restrictions from La Liga, which limited their ability to register and sign players. According to Laporta, that period is now coming to an end. “We’ve worked hard to stabilize our finances and meet all of La Liga’s requirements,” he explained. “Now we’re in a position where every euro that comes in can be used directly to improve the squad. This gives us the flexibility we need to compete at the highest level again.”
Spanish media reports suggest that Deco is particularly focused on strengthening the attack. With some inconsistencies in the forward line and the departure of certain veterans, reinforcements are being planned. Among the areas being looked at is the goalkeeper position. Laporta confirmed that the club is in conversations with Wojciech Szczesny of Juventus, possibly as an alternative or complement to Marc-André ter Stegen, whose season was affected by injuries.
One of the names that has long been linked with a move to Barcelona is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker, known for his physicality, goal-scoring instincts, and global marketability, has been seen by many as a dream signing for the Catalans. However, Laporta downplayed any current interest in the Manchester City star. “Nothing is impossible, but we’re not working on a signing like that at the moment,” he said. “He just renewed his contract with City, so right now it’s not something we’re pursuing.”
Laporta also touched on past interest in Nico Williams, the Athletic Bilbao winger who is expected to be one of the standout players at Euro 2024. The president admitted that Nico was on the club’s radar last summer but confirmed that they ultimately chose to prioritize Dani Olmo instead. “We did consider Nico, but we decided to go for Dani Olmo. Now, we’re evaluating other options. The market is constantly evolving, and we want to make smart, strategic decisions.”
Barcelona fans will be watching closely as the summer unfolds. With the club aiming to return to the top of European football, the coming weeks promise to be decisive. Whether through key contract renewals, strategic signings, or the continued emergence of talents like Lamine Yamal, a new chapter is taking shape at Camp Nou one that Laporta hopes will restore the club’s reputation and competitive edge at the very highest level.
