The 22-year-old striker of Feyenoord couldn't make his mark in the match that Feyenoord lost 4-1 in extra time on Thursday night. At a 2-1 score, the ten-time Mexican international had a huge chance to equalize, but he missed the target. To make matters worse, the striker had to leave the field with a red card in the final minutes after a foul on Gianluca Mancini.

"That was the chance for 2-2," Marciano Vink realizes. "When he missed it, we already knew it would be very difficult," said the former midfielder of Ajax and PSV in the ESPN studio. "He didn't play very well in those two games."

Former Feyenoord striker Pierre van Hooijdonk saw a powerless attacker. "He himself will have felt that he hasn't had much of the ball and he got the chance to shoot his team to the next round. Then you do this on such a pointless ball..."

With the latter phrase, Van Hooijdonk referred to the red card. Colleague analyst Kenneth Perez also noted the consequences of the VAR intervention, which will result in Giménez being suspended for the next European season. "This is very annoying for him. You could end up in a great group in the Champions League. Then you miss the first three games, against Real Madrid or something..."

"It's pure frustration," Perez continued, "frustration about the fact that he couldn't make his mark in two top matches. It's also a very weird foul and clearly a red card. He could have proven that he could also be important at this level. He didn't do that."

In the end, Giménez remains at five goals in nine Europa League matches. In the earlier rounds of the tournament against Lazio, he scored three times. He also found the net against Sturm Graz and Shakhtar Donetsk. If the club top scorer, who has been linked with a transfer, stays at Feyenoord, he will have to hope for a lenient sanction from UEFA. The European football association will still announce how many games suspension his punishment will consist of.
