In a comprehensive interview with Tuttosport, Gianluigi Buffon delves into various aspects of football, offering insights into potential changes to enhance the sport's appeal.

Notably, the retired goalkeeper points out the remarkable evolution of modern goalkeepers, emphasizing the need for FIFA to explore measures that would introduce greater challenges for these net guardians.

Buffon's proposed solution is thought-provoking – the enlargement of goal dimensions. He argues that the current goal size has remained unchanged since 1875, suggesting that while it might have been appropriate back then, advancements in goalkeeper skills have rendered it less conducive to exciting play. Comparing the present to three decades ago, Buffon highlights a significant shift in the success rate of long-range shots. Where ten out of fifty attempts used to find the back of the net, today, only three manage to beat the goalkeeper, especially one towering at two meters.

This call for change comes from a football icon who bid farewell to his illustrious goalkeeping career at Parma this year. Having debuted in 1995 for the same club where it all began, Buffon's journey spanned over a thousand matches, showcasing his exceptional skills and longevity in the game. While he has hung up his gloves, Buffon has seamlessly transitioned into a managerial role, currently serving as the team manager for the Italian national team.

Beyond his contributions on the field, Buffon's influence extends to the administrative side of football. He played a pivotal role in assisting the Italian Football Federation in securing the hosting rights for the prestigious 2032 UEFA European Championship. This multifaceted involvement underscores Buffon's enduring commitment to the sport, both as a player and a strategic thinker shaping its future landscape.
