Schalke 04 will have to look for a new sporting director. Peter Knäbel has informed the fallen German top club that he does not want to renew his contract, which expires next summer.

Knäbel has been working for Schalke since April 2018, where he started as the technical director after his switch from VfB Stuttgart. In March 2021, the former midfielder of teams like VfL Bochum and 1860 Munich was promoted to the sporting director role.
As a manager at Schalke, Knäbel has experienced turbulent times in Gelsenkirchen: in recent seasons, Die Königsblauen have been relegated, promoted, and relegated again from the Bundesliga. Currently, the club is in sixteenth place in the 2. Bundesliga. Recently, Belgian Karel Geraerts was appointed as the new coach.
"I found it important to inform the club leadership about my decision at an early stage. Until my departure, I will continue to support the coach and the management daily and do everything to make Schalke 04 successful again," Knäbel told Bild.
