Napoli chairman gives next hint about Conte’s future during title celebration

Everything points to Napoli and Antonio Conte parting ways again after just one season. Chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis seemed to bid farewell to the successful coach during his speech at Monday night’s title celebration, suggesting he will leave through the front door.

Antonio Conte’s first season in charge of Napoli brought immediate success, with the club lifting the Serie A title and reclaiming domestic glory.

After a turbulent 2022–23 campaign that saw the reigning champions finish a disappointing tenth, Conte’s arrival was seen as a turning point and the results initially backed that up. The team rediscovered their edge, consistency, and defensive solidity under the experienced coach, culminating in a championship triumph that few predicted just a year earlier.

However, behind the scenes, not everything was as harmonious as the celebrations might suggest. From early in the season, tensions began to surface between Conte and the club’s management. One of the major flashpoints was the winter departure of Georgian star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain. The winger had been pivotal in Napoli’s previous title-winning season and was expected to be a cornerstone of Conte’s project. The decision to sell him in January, reportedly against Conte’s wishes, did not go down well with the coach. He was openly critical of the move, making his dissatisfaction public in several press conferences a rarity in the tightly managed environment of Italian top-flight football.

Napoli’s success this season, despite internal frictions, has been attributed largely to Conte’s tactical adaptability. Throughout the campaign, he was forced to deal with an injury-ridden squad, often having to rotate formations and experiment with different systems sometimes shifting between four or five tactical setups in a single month. Yet, his ability to extract results and maintain unity on the pitch never faltered. In the end, the Scudetto returned to Naples, confirming Conte's reputation as one of Europe’s most effective if sometimes demanding managers.

Still, the cracks in the working relationship between Conte and club president Aurelio De Laurentiis could not be ignored. After the final match of the season and the official Scudetto celebration on Monday night, De Laurentiis took the stage with a speech that seemed to double as a farewell.

"I must give this man a warm embrace," he said in front of thousands of celebrating fans. "He took over a team that was on the edge of the abyss. Then he had to carry on without a star like Kvaratskhelia, face several injuries, and manage four or five different systems. He showed the world that only true football knowledge counts."

The president’s tone was one of gratitude and admiration but also finality. He went on to invite the crowd to applaud Conte, acknowledging his work in guiding Napoli to their second title in three years. "I wish him all the success in his professional life. He is a man who deserves respect and success. Thank you, Antonio!"

That final sentence, delivered with a mix of emotion and formality, seemed to signal the end of Conte’s brief, yet impactful, tenure in Naples. The departure would mirror that of Luciano Spalletti, who also left after winning the league in 2023 though in much less graceful fashion. Spalletti’s exit was marred by disagreements and miscommunication, whereas Conte appears to be receiving a send-off worthy of his achievements.

According to multiple reports in the Italian media, Conte and De Laurentiis are scheduled to meet on Tuesday following a high-profile visit to the Vatican, where the team is set to be received by the Pope. That meeting is expected to finalize the decision for Conte to step down. Sources suggest the separation will be mutual, with both parties agreeing that their visions for the club’s future no longer align.

Speculation has already begun over who will take over the reins at Napoli. One of the most surprising names being floated is Massimiliano Allegri, who was recently dismissed by Juventus after a turbulent final season in Turin. Allegri, known for his pragmatic approach and tactical discipline, previously succeeded Conte at Juventus in 2014, leading the club to further domestic dominance.

Should Allegri take over at Napoli, it would mark another intriguing twist in the recent coaching merry-go-round in Italian football. Meanwhile, Conte is already being tipped for a potential return to Juventus especially as current coach Igor Tudor’s future remains uncertain. Conte’s emotional ties to the Turin club, where he won multiple titles both as a player and a manager, could pave the way for a dramatic comeback.

As the season draws to a close, one thing is clear: despite the trophy, Napoli’s upcoming summer will be anything but quiet. A potential managerial swap involving Conte and Allegri, plus squad restructuring in the wake of another high-profile departure, could reshape the Serie A landscape once again. The champions may be celebrating today, but big decisions await just around the corner.
