After the departures of playmaker Marco Reus and coach Edin Terzic, Borussia Dortmund announced on Friday the "separation" from Mats Hummels.

This marks the end of an era for the club, as Hummels has been a significant presence both on and off the pitch.

The 35-year-old German international defender, who was not called up for Euro 2024, leaves the club after 14 non-consecutive seasons – nine in the first stint and five in the second – thus becoming a free agent. Hummels has been a cornerstone of Dortmund's defense, known for his leadership, tactical awareness, and robust defending skills.

During his time with the Black and Yellows, the player, who was a World Cup champion with the German national team in 2014 in Brazil, won, among other trophies, two Bundesligas and two German Cups. His contributions have been instrumental in Dortmund's successes, and he has been a fan favorite throughout his tenure.

Hummels first joined Borussia Dortmund in 2008, initially on loan from Bayern Munich before making the move permanent. He quickly established himself as a key player and helped the team to win back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012. After a successful first spell, he returned to Bayern Munich in 2016, only to rejoin Dortmund three years later in 2019, further solidifying his legacy at the club.

His departure signifies a period of transition for Borussia Dortmund as they look to rebuild and strengthen their squad for future challenges. Hummels' experience and presence will be missed, but his legacy will endure at Signal Iduna Park. The club and its supporters will remember his pivotal role in some of their most memorable achievements over the past decade and a half.

As Hummels enters free agency, there will undoubtedly be interest from various clubs looking to add his experience and defensive prowess to their ranks. His future remains uncertain, but his past contributions to Borussia Dortmund are indelible and celebrated by fans and teammates alike.
