Aaron Ramsdale no longer wants to stay silent about homophobia in football. The brother of the Arsenal goalkeeper is gay, and Ramsdale hopes that one day he can attend a match without the fear of being insulted.
In a monologue on The Players' Tribune website, Ramsdale writes that he wants the football world to be open to everyone. 'I want this sport to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone. That my brother Ollie, or anyone of any sexual orientation, race, or religion, can attend a match without fear.'
Ramsdale has been bothered by homophobic chants and other offensive insults from supporters over the past years. 'I have bitten my tongue far too often when I heard something stupid like that. I think my brother has done the same. We thought it would get easier. That stops today.'
More Toxic
The goalkeeper believes that the football world is becoming increasingly negative and toxic. 'Whether it's on social media or in a stadium, many people have just lost it. I am grateful for the support of my manager (Mikel Arteta). He is always there for me when needed.'
This was especially the case last season when Ramsdale and his girlfriend went through a tragedy. His partner had a miscarriage, just before the season was set to resume after the World Cup break. 'We flew back to London from our vacation destination. The feeling we had during that flight is indescribable. I want people to know that they are not alone when they have to go through something like this.'
