Arsenal sets sights on 'surprising' transfer of Dutch international

Arsenal is heading to the transfer market for a new right-back, according to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano. The English top club has set its sights on Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen. However, Arsenal is not the only club interested in the 23-year-old wing-back, who is also attracting attention from the top Spanish leagues. Frimpong has a contract with Leverkusen until mid-2028.

"Arsenal is looking to strengthen the right-back position and has scouted Frimpong for this purpose,” says Romano. Currently, the Gunners have Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White available for that position, while the injured Jurriën Timber can also play right-back.

Therefore, it's surprising that the Londoners are looking for a new right-back. “It won't happen immediately, but Arsenal is closely monitoring several players for that position for next year. João Cancelo, who can be picked up for a low transfer fee, is also on the list.”

If Arsenal decides to take action, they will have to compete with clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid. Additionally, the price for which Frimpong can be acquired from Leverkusen is also known. The single-time Dutch international recently signed a new contract, which, according to German media, includes a buyout clause. As a result, he can be bought for forty million euros.

Frimpong currently plays at Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, who is also in the picture as a coach for Real Madrid if Carlo Ancelotti leaves. According to Spanish media, the former player demanded that he would only sign with Los Blancos if he was guaranteed that the speedy defender would be signed. President Florentino Pérez is reportedly hesitant and is said to be unwilling to lay down a sum of forty million euros.

This season, Frimpong has already scored six goals and made seven assists in seventeen matches for Leverkusen. Partly due to his strong performances, his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) last month rose by a significant 14.6 million euros to 48.7 million euros. With this, Frimpong is among the three most valuable Dutch players, only behind Frenkie de Jong (50 million euros) and Matthijs de Ligt (65.2 million euros).
