Chelsea produced an impressive pre-season performance as they comfortably defeated AC Milan 3-0, with João Pedro scoring twice and Moisés Caicedo adding a spectacular third goal. Xabi Alonso’s side controlled large periods of the contest and created numerous opportunities against a Milan team that has been particularly active in the transfer market this summer. Jorrel Hato was also handed another important opportunity to impress, starting as part of a three-man defence and remaining on the pitch for 80 minutes. Chelsea were able to sustain pressure because of the control they established in midfield, recovering loose balls quickly and preventing Milan from developing sustained attacking sequences of their own. That allowed Alonso’s team to spend long spells in opposition territory and gave the attacking players repeated opportunities to combine around the Milan defence. For a team still working through its pre-season preparations, the intensity and coordination of Chelsea’s performance will have been particularly encouraging. Friendly results are rarely the main priority at this stage, but the manner in which a team performs can offer important indications about the progress being made tactically and physically before competitive football begins.
Hato’s involvement was another notable aspect of the match. The defender started on the left side of a three-man defensive structure and completed 80 minutes before being withdrawn. Playing in that system requires more than simply defending the penalty area, as the outside centre-backs are regularly expected to step forward in possession, cover wide areas and help the team progress the ball from the back. Chelsea’s dominance meant Hato was not constantly under defensive pressure, but the match still offered valuable minutes as he continues adapting to Alonso’s ideas. His ability to operate comfortably in more than one defensive role could become useful during the season, particularly if Chelsea continue experimenting with different formations depending on the opponent.
Inter Beat Juventus in All-Italian Pre-Season Clash
Elsewhere, Inter Milan secured a 2-1 victory over Juventus in a meeting between two of Italian football’s traditional heavyweights. Even in a friendly, meetings between Juventus and Inter carry additional interest because of the history between the clubs, and Inter made the stronger start by taking the lead inside the opening 20 minutes. Federico Dimarco arrived to meet a delivery from the left and converted from close range, giving Inter an early advantage and forcing Juventus to chase the game. The goal reflected one of Dimarco’s greatest strengths: his willingness to advance from his usual position and appear in attacking areas at exactly the right moment.
Juventus attempted to respond, but Inter remained organised and eventually doubled their advantage around the hour mark through Andy Diouf. The midfielder found the net to make it 2-0, although goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio will feel he could have dealt with the situation more effectively. The second goal placed Inter firmly in control and gave them the opportunity to manage the closing stages rather than taking unnecessary risks in pursuit of another. Juventus did manage to reduce the deficit in the closing minutes through Francisco Conceição. The former Ajax player was released into space behind the Inter defence and showed excellent composure once he reached the penalty area, calmly finishing to make it 2-1. His late goal gave Juventus some encouragement and ensured Inter could not completely relax before the final whistle, but there was not enough time for the Turin side to find an equaliser. Teun Koopmeiners was also involved, playing one half after being introduced as a substitute and gaining useful minutes as he works towards full match fitness.
Positive Signs for Chelsea and Inter Ahead of the New Season
For Chelsea, the 3-0 victory will be particularly satisfying because it combined a convincing result with several strong individual performances. João Pedro’s two goals demonstrated his sharpness in front of goal, while Caicedo influenced the match both creatively and with his spectacular finish. Hato was given another extended opportunity within Alonso’s defensive system, and Chelsea were able to create chances consistently against opponents who have strengthened significantly during the summer. The challenge will now be carrying that level of control into competitive fixtures, where opponents will apply greater pressure and mistakes will carry considerably greater consequences.
Inter can also take encouragement from their victory over Juventus. Dimarco once again showed his attacking influence from the left, Diouf added another option from midfield and the team managed the majority of the match effectively despite conceding late. Juventus, meanwhile, will focus less on the final score and more on the aspects of their performance that still require improvement before the season begins. The defensive situations that led to Inter’s goals will need attention, although Conceição’s composed finish provided a positive moment towards the end. With competitive football approaching, both matches offered useful evidence of where the four teams currently stand, but Chelsea’s authoritative win over Milan was undoubtedly the most convincing performance of the weekend.
