Carlos Borges was initially on his way to West Ham United, until Ajax hijacked the deal. The winger is happy to be in Amsterdam.
Ajax secures Borges, who will play under the name 'Forbs', for five seasons. 'I'm excited and happy to be here. When they told me that Ajax wanted me, I was in Portugal.
They told me about the project and how I would fit into the team. That's what you want to hear as a player, so then I said: this is the right step for me. I was in shock and surprised, but I'm here now, so it was real', says Forbs via the Ajax channels. 'For young players, it's a league with many opportunities, so I love the Eredivisie. Players like Xavi Simons have gone far in this league.
Director of Football Affairs Sven Mislintat explains what Forbs is going to add to Ajax. 'We had a lot of competition, including from a Premier League club, but at some point, we were able to make a move. Carlos immediately understood who we are, what we stand for, and what is possible here. He's a fantastic boy, extremely fast, I think he's going to be one of the fastest players in the Eredivisie. He's very bold and is the type of player who can make a difference when dribbling and solve problems in the last line. I'm very happy to add him to the team. He has the weapons we need to win matches.'
