The last time Chelsea lost so many matches, they got relegated

Chelsea is having a disastrous season. The club spent hundreds of millions of pounds on players in the last two transfer windows, but they have already lost 22 times this season. The last time that happened, Chelsea got relegated from the top division to the second tier.

After the heavy defeat against Manchester United, Chelsea currently sits in 12th place in the league with just one matchday remaining. If they finish in this position, it would be their lowest final ranking since the 1993/94 season when Chelsea finished 14th. Since the turn of the century, the London club has only finished outside the top six once.

In all competitions, Chelsea has already accumulated 22 losses this season. The last time they suffered such a high number of defeats was in the 1978/79 season when they finished 22nd and were relegated from the top division. It's worth noting that Chelsea played more matches that season.

After the match, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard tried to identify the root cause of the problem. He painfully concluded that the work done on the training ground is not sufficient. "Every team that wins in the Premier League needs this as a foundation," he told Sky Sports. "Without it, the whole tactical aspect doesn't matter. We need to look for reasons why we are in the position we are now, and there are plenty of them."

Lampard took over from Graham Potter at the beginning of April. However, he believes that his development as a coach has somewhat stalled at Chelsea. "It has been a poor year for the club. If you ask me what I have learned during this short period, in terms of coaching, not much. Four or five defenders, two or three in midfield. Those things are not important if the foundation is not there. But I am certainly not the victim here, I enjoy working for this club."
