Urbigs unusual shirt number against the USA

As he had been against Finland, Jonas Urbig was also part of the Germany national team squad against the USA - with a special shirt number.

Jonas Urbig and the unusual number 1 story before Germanys World Cup opener

Jonas Urbig is not part of the official Germany World Cup squad, but his presence around the national team has still become one of the more curious stories of the final preparation phase. The 22-year-old goalkeeper, who is travelling with the group as a training keeper, has suddenly found himself involved in the matchday environment of the senior national team in a way he had never experienced before. After sitting on the bench for the first time in a senior international during the 4-0 friendly win over Finland in Mainz, Urbig was once again included in Julian Nagelsmanns matchday squad for the final warm-up match against the United States in Chicago.

On paper, that may look like a small detail. In reality, it says quite a lot about the delicate situation Germany have had to manage in goal ahead of the tournament. Manuel Neuer, the established first-choice goalkeeper and one of the most recognisable figures in German football, has been working his way back from the effects of a calf injury. His absence from the final test matches did not remove him from the World Cup plans, but it did force the coaching staff to adjust the structure of the squad for the friendlies against Finland and the USA.

That is where Urbig came in. Although he is not officially listed as part of the World Cup 2026 squad, the FC Bayern goalkeeper was needed as cover in the final matchday squads. What made the situation especially eye-catching was not simply his place on the bench, but the number on his back. As had already been the case against Finland, Urbig officially wore shirt number 1 against the United States. In tournament football, that number carries obvious symbolic weight. It is traditionally reserved for the starting goalkeeper, and in Germanys case it is expected to belong to Neuer once the competition begins.

For Urbig, wearing the number 1 was not a sign that the hierarchy had changed. It was a consequence of a very specific administrative and sporting situation. Oliver Baumann started in goal in both friendly matches, while Alexander Nübel was also part of the goalkeeping group. However, both had already been assigned their World Cup shirt numbers, just like the rest of the players in the official squad. Baumann wore number 12 and Nübel wore number 21. Since those numbers were already linked to the final tournament registration, there was no reason to alter them for the warm-up matches. Urbig, stepping in for Neuer during this temporary phase, therefore took the vacant number 1.

The image was unusual because Urbig is not expected to be Germanys number 1 at the World Cup. In fact, he is not expected to be available for selection unless circumstances change dramatically. His role is primarily to help the squad in training, maintain the intensity of goalkeeper sessions and provide security while Neuer completes his recovery. Still, these moments can matter for a young goalkeeper. Sitting on the bench for the senior national team, travelling with the group and being involved in the rhythm of international matchdays can offer valuable experience, even if he does not play a single minute.

Germanys 2-1 win over the USA in Chicago served as the final competitive rehearsal before the tournament opener. Baumann again started between the posts, and the match allowed Nagelsmann to give his team another test before the real pressure begins. The result itself was positive, but the goalkeeper situation remained a topic of interest because of Neuers planned return. According to Nagelsmann, the expectation is clear: Neuer should be fully fit for the first group match against Curacao on 14 June at 19:00 and is due to return to team training during the week before the game.

That statement is important because Germany do not want uncertainty around one of the most sensitive positions on the pitch. Goalkeeper debates can quickly become disruptive during tournaments, particularly when a high-profile player is returning from injury. Neuer is not just another squad member. He is a long-serving captain figure, a World Cup winner and a goalkeeper whose status has shaped the German national team for more than a decade. If he is fit, the number 1 shirt is expected to return to him for the opening match.

At the same time, the final warm-up phase showed that Germany have built-in alternatives. Baumann has been trusted with starts in both recent friendlies and has given the coaching staff a stable option. Nübel, wearing number 21, is also part of the tournament group and remains in the picture. Urbig, meanwhile, occupies a different space. He is close enough to the squad to be involved when needed, but not officially part of the final group unless a specific situation allows it.

FIFA regulations are clear on this point. Urbig could still be added to the squad during the tournament, but only if another goalkeeper suffers a serious injury or illness. That makes the goalkeeping position different from the situation involving outfield players, where changes to the squad are only possible until no later than 24 hours before kick-off of the opening match against Curacao. Once that deadline passes, field-player replacements are no longer possible under normal circumstances.

This distinction has already had a direct impact on Germanys squad planning. Assan Ouedraogo was called up on Friday evening after Lennart Karl suffered injury misfortune. Because that replacement took place within the permitted window, Ouedraogo was able to join the squad for the tournament. However, the rules also mean he must inherit Karls shirt number. As a result, Ouedraogo will wear number 25 at the World Cup rather than choosing a new number of his own.

These details may seem minor from the outside, but they are part of the strict administrative framework that surrounds major international tournaments. Shirt numbers are not just cosmetic once a squad is officially registered. They are tied to tournament documentation, player lists and regulatory requirements. That is why Baumann and Nübel did not simply switch to the number 1 in the friendlies, and why Ouedraogo must take over the number previously allocated to Karl.

For Urbig, the story is both unusual and memorable. He is not in the official World Cup squad, yet he has already experienced being named in senior matchday squads, sitting on the bench during international fixtures and wearing one of the most prestigious numbers in German football. It is the kind of situation that can happen only in the narrow space between injury management, tournament rules and final preparations.

For Germany, the priority now is much more straightforward. Neuer must complete his return, the coaching staff must decide how to balance experience and fitness, and the team must enter the Curacao match with clarity. The friendly wins over Finland and the USA helped maintain momentum, but tournament football will bring a different level of scrutiny. If Neuer walks out with number 1 on his back on 14 June, the strange sight of Urbig wearing that number in the warm-up matches will quickly become a footnote. Until then, it remains one of the more curious subplots of Germanys build-up to the World Cup.
